Canada, through Defence Minister David McGuinty, has officially become a part of the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative. This program provides loans to member nations for enhancing defense capabilities. McGuinty emphasized that this agreement bolsters collective security, aids in the development of crucial defense assets, and grants Canadian industries access to European defense markets while contributing to security in Europe and Ukraine.
The formal inclusion in the SAFE program follows closely after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s endorsement of a strategic defense and security partnership with the European Union, which encompassed joining SAFE. Under this initiative, participating countries can secure low-interest loans for collaborative military equipment procurement, enabling Canadian firms to compete for these joint projects.
Introduced by the EU in March, the SAFE program is part of Europe’s efforts to strengthen its defense in light of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Recently, the Council of the EU announced the initial round of financial support under SAFE, benefiting nations like Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain, Croatia, Portugal, and Romania. The subsequent wave, anticipated to be approved next Tuesday, will extend financial aid to Estonia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Finland.
