WestJet has announced a new policy allowing passengers with flights booked between July 30 and Aug. 4 to make changes or cancel their bookings without incurring any fees. This initiative aims to offer travelers more flexibility and confidence amidst an ongoing labor dispute with WestJet flight attendants.
Earlier this month, WestJet flight attendants voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike, with 99.4% supporting the action. This means approximately 4,400 union members represented by CUPE Local 8125 could potentially go on strike starting Aug. 2. WestJet assured its customers that they are working towards a resolution to avoid any disruption to travel plans.
CUPE 8125 president Alia Hussain expressed appreciation for WestJet’s decision to allow booking changes, acknowledging the uncertainty the labor dispute has caused for passengers. While the airline’s move does not confirm an imminent strike, Hussain commended it as a responsible measure that any business would take.
WestJet faced a significant labor dispute in the summer of 2024 when unionized airline mechanics went on strike over the Canada Day long weekend, impacting a large number of travelers. The airline emphasized its commitment to ongoing negotiations and readiness to make necessary improvements for cabin crew while ensuring the future sustainability of WestJet.
