“William Shatner and Daughter Beat Cancer Together”

No father and daughter would willingly face the journey William Shatner and his youngest daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, were forced to take together. Both were diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer within months of each other.

The 95-year-old Canadian actor, famous for his role as Capt. James T. Kirk on “Star Trek,” revealed to People magazine that he confronted his most challenging ordeal off-screen when he received a Stage 4 malignant melanoma diagnosis in June 2023, which had metastasized to his lungs and brain.

Shortly after, Gretsch, aged 61, detected a lump in her breast.

During a joint interview with her father, Gretsch recounted waking up one night and feeling a bump under her breast, initially mistaking it for a bug bite until tests revealed the truth.

Amid her chemotherapy treatment, Gretsch sought comfort from her father, who promptly came over, embraced her, and assured her that this would be just a temporary setback in her life.

Shatner received his cancer diagnosis while Gretsch was still undergoing treatment, but he remained composed.

He reflected on the moment he was told he had cancer, emphasizing that timely intervention had saved his life and expressing gratitude for what he perceived as the universe looking out for him.

Both Shatner and Gretsch have been cancer-free since late 2024, attributing their recovery to finding the right medical experts for their conditions.

Gretsch detailed her treatment journey, including multiple rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and 30 sessions of radiation therapy.

Shatner underwent surgery to remove a facial tumor and received two years of immunotherapy targeting the cancer in his lungs and brain.

The duo shared that their ordeal has deepened their appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

Shatner expressed his gratitude for the wonders of nature, like watching a hummingbird or playing fetch with his dog, highlighting the magic in everyday moments.

CBC News attempted to reach out to Shatner for comment but did not receive a response before the publication deadline.
