In a social media post on Thursday evening, Trump mentioned that both Republicans and Democrats have collaborated to secure funding for the majority of the government until September, while also extending current funding for Homeland Security. He called for bipartisan support in voting for the agreement.
Democrats requested the two-week extension and expressed readiness to block the comprehensive spending bill if their demands are not met, potentially leading to a government shutdown by withholding necessary votes from Republicans.
The Senate was poised to vote on the deal either on Thursday night or Friday. Republican leaders, who initially sought a longer extension of Homeland Security funding, were still in negotiations regarding last-minute amendment requests and ensuring adequate support within their party.
‘Avoiding Government Shutdown’
This development comes as Trump faces mounting public pressure to rein in ICE after the deaths of two American citizens in Minneapolis. Senate Democrats are pushing for changes in ICE practices, including requiring agents to identify themselves, wear body cameras, halt roaming patrols, and adhere to local police use-of-force guidelines.
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed reluctance to break up the funding package but emphasized the need to act swiftly if necessary to avoid a government shutdown.
