Justice Minister Sean Fraser emphasized the importance of global unity and respect at the Halifax International Security Forum. During a panel discussion, Fraser indirectly addressed the issue of U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments about Canada, which had angered many Canadians from various political backgrounds.
Fraser highlighted the disruption in the long-standing trade relationship between Canada and the U.S., cautioning against damaging a historic partnership for short-term political gain. He warned against catering to a narrow segment of the electorate, as it could pave the way for future populist leaders who may exploit the erosion of norms and rights.
The panel included Rushan Abbas from the Campaign for Uyghurs and Colombia’s Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez. U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer joined the discussion and criticized a video montage depicting derogatory labels used by Trump against politicians, calling it “indecent” and unhelpful in fostering friendships.
Cramer emphasized the importance of words and suggested that the video failed to present a balanced view of the political landscape in the U.S. The panel also addressed issues such as the invasion of Ukraine, treatment of Uyghurs in China, and terrorism in Nigeria.
Fraser underscored the need for political civility and the preservation of decency in public discourse. He stressed the role of independent media and the judiciary in helping citizens navigate complex issues by focusing on facts rather than biases.
The discussion, titled “Democracies Demand Decency,” underscored the importance of treating opponents as potential friends and neighbors rather than enemies. It highlighted the challenges posed by algorithm-driven echo chambers and stressed the need for a collective understanding of factual information to address societal issues effectively.
