“Netanyahu Plans Rafah Crossing Reopening in Gaza”

Israel’s control over the Rafah border crossing has significantly impacted Palestinians in Gaza, serving as their primary link to the outside world. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to reopen the crossing soon, aligning with the second phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire facilitated by the U.S.

The potential reopening brings optimism to many Palestinians, particularly those in need of urgent medical care abroad and individuals longing to reunite with their families outside Gaza. Despite these hopes, stringent regulations will govern the crossing, with Netanyahu specifying that only a limited number of Palestinians will be allowed to pass each day, excluding the transportation of goods initially. Gaza’s other border connections are solely with Israel.

While an Israeli official, speaking on anonymity, hinted at the imminent reopening of the Rafah crossing, expectations suggest it could happen as early as Thursday, as per sources familiar with the discussions. Ali Shaath, newly appointed to lead Gaza’s administrative committee, expressed confidence that the crossing will open bidirectionally the following week, symbolizing a significant step towards Gaza’s reconnection with the global community.

Aid organizations advocate for broader access and the provision of essential supplies through the Rafah crossing. Efforts are underway to facilitate the departure of a limited number of medical evacuees from Gaza initially. Discrepancies exist regarding the daily crossing capacity, with estimates varying between 50 Palestinians allowed in and out daily to 50 in and 150 out.

Save the Children stresses the importance of unrestricted access and calls for the establishment of a medical corridor between Gaza and East Jerusalem. The organization emphasizes the critical need for increased humanitarian aid, including medical assistance and shelter supplies, underscoring the long-standing shortages faced by Palestinians in Gaza.

Moreover, the UN emphasizes the necessity of opening the crossing for both humanitarian and private sector cargo to support Gaza’s economic recovery. Multiple entities, including Egypt and various institutions, will oversee the operations at Rafah, yet Israel retains control over entrance and exit approvals. Netanyahu highlights the disarmament of Hamas and the destruction of remaining tunnels as key objectives, linking potential reconstruction efforts in Gaza to demilitarization.
