Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand emphasized Canada’s commitment to public safety, transnational repression, and foreign interference during ongoing trade negotiations with India. Anand highlighted the government’s vigilance in prioritizing security matters with all nations. She mentioned the reassessment of the economic relationship with India while ensuring the independence of Canadian law enforcement agencies.
The recent announcement of trade negotiations between Canada and India followed a meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 summit in South Africa. Carney expressed optimism about the potential trade deal, aiming to boost Canada-India trade to $70 billion, considering India’s significant economic position.
Anand acknowledged the evolving global trade landscape and emphasized the need for Canada to adapt its foreign policy focus in response to changing dynamics, including the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. She reiterated Canada’s commitment to core values such as safeguarding democratic institutions against transnational threats while fostering trade relationships.
India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, highlighted ongoing trade discussions between the two countries, emphasizing the importance of addressing security concerns while strengthening bilateral ties. Meanwhile, Sikh activists in Canada expressed reservations about Carney’s approach following the trade announcement, with some asserting their disapproval through a recent referendum advocating for an independent Sikh Punjab.
Carney underscored the importance of viewing India as a reliable trading partner and stressed the significance of enhancing trade relations with one of the world’s largest economies. He also emphasized Canada’s collaboration with Indian authorities to combat foreign interference and ensure the safety of Canadians. The diplomatic thaw between Canada and India signifies a positive shift in relations, marked by efforts to deepen economic ties while addressing security challenges.
