Laura Greaves sought a gentle ewe in Saskatchewan to be a companion for her blind llama, Maple. Greaves, an experienced veterinarian, was used to caring for animals with special needs and found a suitable match in Peeps, a talkative sheep from Eyebrow, Sask.
When Greaves discovered Maple, she was looking for a llama to protect her animals from coyotes. Maple, who was blind in one eye and had deteriorating vision in the other, required immediate attention. Greaves, along with her friend Jacquie Poole, embarked on a long trip to Alberta to rescue Maple, despite her poor health condition.
Upon Maple’s arrival at Greaves’s property near Regina, it became evident that her eye condition was critical, leading to the decision to remove both eyes. The surgery was successful, but Maple struggled to adapt to total darkness. Greaves used sound cues to help Maple navigate her surroundings, but the llama faced challenges in finding essentials like food and water.
Due to the difficult adjustment period, Greaves decided to find a suitable companion for Maple. After receiving an overwhelming response online, Peeps, the sheep, was introduced as Maple’s new friend. Peeps, known for her vocal nature, proved to be a great match for Maple, aiding her in navigation and providing emotional support.
Greaves hopes that Maple and Peeps will eventually join the other animals on the farm. For now, the duo is thriving in their unique bond, offering each other comfort and companionship in their shared journey.
