A triumph for Brazil in alpine skiing was achieved by Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, setting the stage for the nation’s quest for its first Olympic medal in the sport. The victory came at the opening slalom of the World Cup season in Levi, Finland, exactly three months before the men’s slalom event at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina on February 16.
Pinheiro Braathen maintained his lead from the first run, clocking in at 1 minute 50.72 seconds, outpacing 2022 Olympic champion Clement Noel of France by 0.31 seconds. The Brazilian skier’s jubilation was evident as he crossed the finish line, removing his skis, dropping to his knees, and exclaiming “yeah” with arms raised high.
Expressing his personal philosophy, Pinheiro Braathen, draped in the Brazilian flag, stated, “It represents who I am, I think. I am trying to do it my way, trying to ski with my heart, trying to ski for myself instead of for others.” This marked his sixth career victory but the first since competing for Brazil following his departure from the Norwegian ski federation last year.
Acknowledging the challenges he faced, Pinheiro Braathen credited his family, friends, and team for their unwavering support. He emphasized the significance of his win as a personal triumph that he hopes will inspire others to follow their unique paths.
In a show of sportsmanship, Pinheiro Braathen’s competitors Eduard Hallberg, Henrik Kristoffersen, and Loic Meillard secured notable finishes in the race. Meanwhile, skiing icon Marcel Hirscher, who recently made a comeback similar to Pinheiro Braathen, postponed his return due to injury.
The World Cup action continues in Austria, with another men’s slalom scheduled for Saturday, followed by the women’s race the next day. The spotlight now shines on Pinheiro Braathen and his groundbreaking victory, setting the stage for a thrilling Olympic season in alpine skiing.
