Jon Klassen, a Canadian children’s book author and illustrator originally from Winnipeg known for his work on “I Want My Hat Back,” has been honored with the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, valued at nearly $750,000. This prestigious award, overseen by the Swedish Arts Council, recognizes individuals or entities for their significant contributions to children’s and young adult literature. Judges commended Klassen’s collection of works for its subtle, insightful, and humorous exploration of existential themes.
Among Klassen’s notable creations are “I Want My Hat Back,” recounting the story of a bear in search of his distinctive red hat, “This Is Not My Hat,” portraying a small fish in a bowler hat and the larger fish from whom it was pilfered, “We Found a Hat,” depicting two turtles vying for a cowboy hat, and the acclaimed “Cats’ Night Out,” which secured the Governor General’s Literary Award.
Recognized for his remarkable impact on children’s literature, Klassen was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2018. He currently resides in Los Angeles and stands as the first Canadian recipient of this esteemed accolade. Initiated by the Swedish government in 2002, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award carries a prize of five million kronor, equivalent to around $744,000 Canadian dollars.
