China’s Military Drills Near Taiwan Disrupt Air Travel

China’s military conducted joint military exercises around Taiwan involving air, navy, and rocket troops as a strong message against separatist and external interference forces, according to Beijing. Taiwan responded by placing its forces on alert and criticizing China as the “biggest destroyer of peace.” The Chinese drills affected over 100,000 international air travelers due to flight disruptions.

These military maneuvers followed Beijing’s displeasure with a potential significant U.S. arms sale to Taiwan and comments from Japan’s Prime Minister about potential military involvement in a Taiwan-China conflict. While China emphasizes its stance that Taiwan should be under its rule, it did not directly mention the U.S. and Japan in its statement.

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed confidence in the situation, citing his positive relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who views Taiwan’s reunification with China as inevitable. Trump mentioned ongoing naval exercises in the region for the past two decades.

The U.S. maintains unofficial ties with Taiwan and is its primary arms supplier, bound by law to support Taiwan’s defense. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry confirmed conducting rapid response exercises and combat readiness drills in response to China’s military activities, labeling China as an aggressor and peace disruptor.

China’s People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command announced military exercises in various areas around Taiwan, focusing on sea-air combat readiness patrol and blockades on key ports to deter separatist forces and external interference.

Live firing exercises and drills to test sea-air coordination were conducted by China’s military near the Taiwan Strait, drawing a response from Taiwan’s Defense Ministry. The drills prompted concerns about international implications and challenges.

Taiwan’s Civil Aviation Administration reported flight disruptions affecting over 100,000 travelers due to Chinese military activities. China’s military released themed posters online with provocative messaging, emphasizing deterrence against foreign interference.

The heightened tensions led to strong condemnations from Taiwan, accusing China of destabilizing the region and challenging international norms. Taiwan showcased its military capabilities in response to China’s military posturing.

Beijing’s frequent military activities near Taiwan have raised concerns, prompting Taiwan to expedite the development of an air defense system named “Taiwan Shield” or “T-Dome.” The military tensions coincided with Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an’s call for peace and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait during a visit to Shanghai.
