Norwegian biathlon athlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken, a promising contender for the Olympics, has tragically passed away at the age of 27. The International Biathlon Union expressed deep sorrow over Bakken’s sudden death during a training camp in Italy. His lifeless body was discovered in his hotel room in Lavaze, a mountainous town in the Trentino region of Italy, as reported by Norwegian TV NRK.
Bakken had been grappling with myocarditis, a heart condition diagnosed in 2022, which prompted him to pause his competitive pursuits. Despite this setback, he held the title of European champion in the 10-kilometer sprint and two relays and was gearing up to participate in the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Additionally, his accomplishments included clinching four World Cup wins and securing the season-long championship in the mass start category for 2021-22.
Expressing shock and grief, IBU President Olle Dahlin lamented Bakken’s untimely demise, highlighting his resilience and determination in making a comeback to biathlon after facing significant challenges. Dahlin emphasized that Bakken’s memory will endure within the biathlon community and extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and the entire Norwegian biathlon fraternity during this trying period.
