Conservative MP Chris d’Entremont Defects to Liberals

Nova Scotia Member of Parliament Chris d’Entremont announced his departure from the Conservative caucus, citing a lack of alignment with leader Pierre Poilievre’s party direction and disapproval of its “negative” political stance. Expressing his discontent, d’Entremont hinted that other Conservative MPs may follow suit and join the Liberal ranks.

D’Entremont emphasized his decision was fueled by differences in leadership styles and a commitment to serving Canada’s best interests. He stressed the importance of being part of the solution and fostering a collaborative approach rather than focusing on criticism. Notably, he praised Prime Minister Mark Carney’s budget initiatives, particularly the increased funding for vital sectors like infrastructure, fisheries, agriculture, and the military, crucial to his constituency in rural Nova Scotia.

Despite speculation about personal grievances influencing his move, d’Entremont affirmed his choice was motivated by a belief in Carney’s leadership. Carney commended the MP for his bold decision, emphasizing the need for unity in addressing economic challenges, including U.S. tariffs.

Following his transition to the Liberal caucus, d’Entremont was warmly welcomed by fellow MPs, underscoring the party’s growing strength in the House of Commons. While talk of a potential Christmas election looms, the dynamics of opposition parties’ support for the budget remain uncertain.

Acknowledging the Liberals’ longstanding efforts to engage d’Entremont, party members expressed support for his decision, emphasizing the personal nature of his choice. While interactions with other MPs have occurred, active recruitment of floor-crossers was denied.

In response, Conservative MPs voiced disappointment and criticism of d’Entremont’s move, labeling it as a betrayal and strategic maneuver to secure a majority government. The political landscape reflects a shifting dynamic as parties navigate alliances and rivalries in the pursuit of their objectives.
