For almost four years, Kramatorsk in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region has served as a stronghold, playing a significant role as a military logistics center and a symbol of resistance against the advancing Russian threat from the south and east.
As per the recent peace plan proposed by the Trump administration, Ukraine would be required to remove its troops from Kramatorsk and other controlled areas in Donetsk. The proposal suggests transforming the region into a special economic zone.
Maksym Lysenko, an entrepreneur from Pokrovsk, criticized the idea, questioning the abandonment of hard-won territory where lives were sacrificed. He expressed skepticism towards Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s suggestion of a referendum to determine the public’s stance on concessions.
With Russian forces now within 20 kilometers of Kramatorsk, residents face constant threats, leading some to consider leaving amidst ongoing negotiations about the city’s future.
Amidst pressure from the U.S., Trump accused Zelenskyy of clinging to power and called for elections to ensure democracy in Ukraine. Zelenskyy responded by stating readiness for elections if provided with security guarantees.
Public surveys indicate Ukrainian reluctance towards major concessions, particularly withdrawing troops from the Donbas region. While many desire peace, they are not willing to surrender territory.
Recent diplomatic efforts have garnered increased public support for negotiations, with Ukrainians showing willingness to endure the war for favorable peace conditions. However, trust in the U.S. has declined, complicating the peace process.
Despite challenges, Zelenskyy’s proposal of a referendum was seen as an attempt to appease U.S. demands, although executing it faces logistical hurdles, including the need for a ceasefire rejected by Russia.
While progress has been made regarding security guarantees, the territorial issue remains contentious. Ukrainians remain opposed to ceding the Donbas region and view any capitulation as unacceptable.
As more residents leave Kramatorsk due to security concerns, the city’s future remains uncertain. Although many yearn for peace, surrendering territory is perceived as a detrimental move.
