Canadian MPs to Visit Israel and West Bank Amid Tensions

A team comprising five Liberal Members of Parliament (MPs) and one New Democratic Party (NDP) parliamentarian is set to embark on a three-day journey to Israel and the occupied West Bank amidst escalating tensions between Ottawa and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration.

Liberal MP Sameer Zuberi, representing the Pierrefonds-Dollard riding in Montreal, emphasized the importance of international presence in calming situations, prompting the group’s engagement with civil society organizations, Palestinian refugees, displaced individuals, Canadian and Palestinian officials, and parliamentarians in Jordan. This visit follows Canada’s recent recognition of a Palestinian state, a move that drew criticism from Israel and other Western nations.

The MPs’ trip, sponsored by the Canadian Muslim Vote non-profit organization, mirrors a previous delegation’s visit and includes interactions with Palestinian families affected by settler violence and discussions on democratic reform in the West Bank. Despite Israel’s approval of new settlements prior to their arrival, the group remains committed to understanding the challenges faced by Palestinians and advocating for peace.

NDP MP Jenny Kwan, the sole representative from her party, expressed concerns about potential obstacles during the visit but reiterated the group’s unity in dealing with any issues. Both Zuberi and Kwan stressed the importance of engaging with local communities and officials to address pressing issues such as immigration programs and arms trade regulations.

The delegation’s quest for peace and understanding amidst regional tensions underscores the necessity of diplomatic efforts and international cooperation. As they embark on this journey, the group remains focused on promoting dialogue and advocating for the well-being of all individuals, irrespective of their backgrounds or affiliations.
