“Father-Son Duo’s Terror Attack Kills 15 at Bondi Beach”

UPDATE:

  • 15 individuals dead, with 38 others receiving medical attention in hospitals following an assault by two gunmen at a Hanukkah celebration on Australia’s renowned beach.
  • One suspect deceased, the other in a coma; identified as a father-son duo according to investigators.
  • Australian government declares the incident as an act of terrorism.
  • Prime Minister confirms shooter legally owned 6 firearms.

Authorities suspect a father-son duo of perpetrating the killing of 15 individuals at a popular Australian beach, a rare occurrence of gun violence in the country. In response to the recent events, the government has put forth stricter gun control laws, citing criticism of insufficient action against a series of anti-Semitic attacks.

Here is an overview of the key details surrounding the tragic events at Bondi Beach:

Suspects Targeted Jewish Gathering by the Beach

Details on the individuals involved in the Bondi Beach attack remain limited. However, the revelation that the two men captured in social media videos firing weapons were related sparked widespread astonishment.

The deceased 50-year-old father arrived in Australia in 1998 on a student visa and was a resident at the time of his death. Authorities have refrained from disclosing his country of origin.

His 24-year-old son, a native Australian, sustained gunshot wounds and is currently under medical care.

The assailants targeted a Hanukkah event attended by hundreds, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese denouncing it as an act of anti-Semitic terrorism.

Albanese disclosed that the Australian Security Intelligence Agency had conducted a six-month investigation on the son in 2019, particularly focusing on his connections to an Islamic State group cell in Sydney. The agency’s interest primarily lay with the associates rather than the son himself.

According to police, the father possessed a firearms license and was a member of a gun club, indicating his involvement in target shooting.

Victims Include Rabbis and a Young Girl

Among the 15 victims were a rabbi with five children, a Holocaust survivor, and a 10-year-old girl, based on interviews, official statements, and local media accounts.

While the identities of the victims have not been officially released, some details have begun to surface. Here are some of the known victims:

  • Eli Schlanger, 41, served as an assistant rabbi at Chabad Bondi, the event’s organizer.
  • Peter Meagher, a retired policeman and dedicated rugby volunteer, was fatally wounded while working as a freelance photographer at the event.
  • French national Dan Elkayam, 27, was involved in soccer with Rockdale Ilinden Football Club.
  • 10-year-old Matilda, described as a vibrant and joyful child.
  • Reuven Morrison, a member of the Chabad community.
  • Alex Kleytman, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who reportedly shielded his wife during the attack.
  • Rabbi Yaakov Levitan, who served as the secretary of the Sydney Jewish religious organization Beth Din.
  • Tibor Weitzen, 78, who migrated from Israel to Australia in 1988.
  • Marika Pogany, 82, known for her volunteer work.

Recognition for a Bravery Act

A remarkable video broadcast on Australian television portrayed a man tackling and disarming one of the gunmen during the attack before being shot by the other assailant. Identified as Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old Syrian-Muslim fruit shop owner and father of two, he is currently recovering in a hospital.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke commended Ahmed’s heroic intervention during the tragic event.

Increase in Hate Crimes

A surge in anti-Semitic attacks has deeply unsettled many in Australia over the past year.

Out of Australia’s 28 million inhabitants, approximately 117,000 belong to the Jewish community as per official figures.
