“Decline in Trump Costumes Reflects Shift in Canadian Halloween Trends”

According to Canadian costume businesses, dressing up as Donald Trump for Halloween used to be a popular and humorous choice, but the trend has significantly declined in 2025.

Christy Greenwood, the owner of Theatre Garage in Edmonton, mentioned that it has been a long time since someone has requested a Trump costume, attributing the shift to the current political climate.

During Trump’s candidacy in 2016, there was a high demand for Trump-themed costumes, including wigs and makeup to mimic his distinctive appearance. However, interest waned after he won the election and took office.

In response to the declining interest, individuals like Edmonton Oilers player Connor McDavid faced criticism for wearing a Trump-inspired costume to a Halloween event in 2017.

As Trump’s presidency progressed, sentiments towards him soured in Canada, especially as he suggested coercive economic measures to influence Canadian policies.

In Hamilton, where the steel industry has been affected by Trump’s tariffs, demand for Trump costumes has significantly decreased.

Meanwhile, there has been an increase in interest in Canadian-themed costumes, such as Mounties, reflecting a shift away from American cultural symbols.

Costume shoppers in Edmonton indicated that they were not considering dressing up as Trump this year, with many expressing fatigue with political costumes in general.

While some individuals still find humor in impersonating Trump, others see it as a sensitive topic given the political climate.

According to Greenwood, not only Trump costumes but also costumes of other U.S. celebrities have seen a decline in demand this year.

Classic Halloween costumes like clowns, vampires, and traditional characters are currently more popular choices among customers.

Greenwood also noted that there is a growing interest in supporting Canadian industries, with customers inquiring about the origins of products like makeup.
