When Savannah Rose Kulla-Davies left to meet her former partner on Tuesday, her father was unaware it would be their final encounter. In an interview with CBC Toronto, he expressed deep sorrow over her tragic death. Kulla-Davies, 29, was fatally shot at a Brampton plaza by her ex-partner, Anthony Deschepper, 38, who then abducted their 17-month-old daughter, triggering an Amber Alert. Police later fatally shot Deschepper at a gas station in Niagara Falls.
Tuesday began like any other day for Kulla-Davies, who stopped at Starbucks before heading to the plaza to meet Deschepper, as recounted by her brother, Spencer Porter. Today, the plaza serves as a memorial site adorned with flowers in her honor.
Despite their separation, Kulla-Davies intended for Deschepper to spend time with their daughter, reflecting her compassionate nature, according to her father. He highlighted her love for motherhood, a role she embraced wholeheartedly after working as a social worker in Peel Region and nurturing four children.
Three of her children were from a previous relationship, while the youngest was the focus of the Amber Alert and was found unharmed. The family plans to seek guardianship of the youngest child soon.
Deschepper had a history of firearm charges related to an incident involving Kulla-Davies in 2023, with pending trial scheduled for March 2026. Despite being out on bail at the time of the shooting, Deschepper allegedly took Kulla-Davies’ life. Her father criticized the judicial system for allowing such a situation to occur.
The circumstances surrounding Deschepper’s death are under investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit. Another woman in the vehicle during the incident has been charged as an accessory after the fact to murder.
The revelations of Deschepper’s past charges prompted Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown to advocate for stricter bail regulations. The federal government has introduced legislation to amend the Criminal Code, emphasizing the need for enhanced bail restrictions. Porter expressed that his sister did not deserve the tragic fate she met.
