“Anne of Scream Gables” Doll Amuses Social Media

A doll resembling the famous character Anne of Green Gables has sparked amusement on social media, earning the nickname “Anne of Scream Gables.” Initially ridiculed on Facebook, the doll was actually crafted by the late artist Heather Danylewich, as revealed by her son, Andrew Danylewich. The doll’s photo was shared on the ThriftStore and GoodwillFind Facebook group, attracting attention with humorous comments.

Andrew Danylewich, an artist from Liverpool, N.S., and owner of ADJA Studio and Gallery, shared that his mother specialized in fabric art, creating intricate fabric murals and three-dimensional pieces. The Anne Shirley doll is believed to have been made to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the classic novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Due to the unique nature of his mother’s fabric art, surviving pieces are scarce. Andrew recalled seeing some of her work at the Museum of Natural History in Halifax two decades ago. Although the Anne doll has gone missing from the Value Village thrift store, Andrew hopes to locate it for display at his gallery.

Despite the doll’s playful teasing, Andrew acknowledges its slightly unconventional appearance but notes the resemblance of the doll’s smile to that of his mother. He remains optimistic about finding the doll and intends to showcase it in his gallery, or hopes that whoever possesses it appreciates the artwork.
