“TV Show Boosts Interest in Alberta’s UNESCO Site”

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta is experiencing increased interest following a mention on a popular American TV show. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, located about 150 kilometers south of Calgary, was featured in a recent episode of the award-winning medical drama “The Pitt.”

The character Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, portrayed by actor Noah Wyle, expresses a desire to visit the site in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, stating, “I’ve never seen the badlands.” The buffalo jump site, used by Indigenous people for thousands of years to hunt bison, features an interpretive center built into the sandstone cliff that explores Blackfoot culture, ecology, and archaeology.

Quinton Crow Shoe, the head of marketing at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, has noticed an uptick in visitor interest since the show aired, with some guests mentioning the TV mention as the reason for their visit. Crow Shoe acknowledges the impact of the show on social media and email engagement, expressing gratitude for the increased awareness and curiosity it has generated.

Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe anticipates that the recent spike in interest will translate into higher visitor numbers and tour bookings during the peak season from May to September. Promotions like discounts offered through the national Canada Strong Pass have also contributed to the site’s popularity.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is part of a network of attractions in southern Alberta, including Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Waterton Lakes National Park, encouraging visitors to explore the diverse offerings in the region. Travel Alberta and Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir have capitalized on the TV show’s mention by releasing promotional content and sharing the clip on social media, showcasing Alberta’s rich history and cultural landmarks to a global audience.
