“You’ve Changed” Author Ian Williams Channels Construction Course into Novel

In creating his latest book “You’ve Changed,” author Ian Williams immersed himself in a construction course to understand the world of his protagonist. Williams, known for his works in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, is currently a professor of English at the University of Toronto and heads the creative writing program there.

The novel delves into the mid-life crises of a couple, Beckett and Princess, triggered by a weekend visit from friends. As Princess contemplates surgery to address their relationship issues, Beckett opts to revive his contracting business in hopes of rekindling their connection. The narrative explores the dynamics of change within relationships, leading to the book being longlisted for the prestigious 2025 Giller Prize.

During a discussion on “Bookends with Mattea Roach,” Williams shared insights into his book, revealing that the title was inspired by a Toronto mural bearing the phrase “You’ve Changed.” He explained that the process of change and self-reflection depicted in the novel stemmed from his daily encounters with the mural.

Inhabiting the perspective of Beckett, a character distinct from himself, enabled Williams to delve into themes of empathy and imagination in storytelling. By immersing himself in a construction course, Williams gained a deeper understanding of his character’s mindset and motivations, emphasizing the importance of embodying diverse viewpoints in writing.

The novel also scrutinizes traditional notions of masculinity, linking Beckett’s sense of manhood to his work and possessions. Williams highlighted the societal pressure to define oneself through occupation and possessions, underscoring the role of labor in shaping identity and status.

Ultimately, “You’ve Changed” presents a poignant exploration of personal transformation, relationships, and societal expectations, offering a thought-provoking narrative that challenges conventional norms and perceptions.
