“P.E.I. Students Seek Gov’t Aid for Challenges”

Post-secondary students in Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) are facing challenges and require increased government assistance to address their needs, according to representatives from the University of Prince Edward Island’s student union. The student union members put forward six suggestions to Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) at the education and economic growth committee meeting.

Shreesh Agrawal, the vice president of the UPEI student union, emphasized that these recommendations are crucial not only for educational purposes but also to sustain the future of P.E.I. and foster economic growth by retaining young talent. While acknowledging the existing support systems, Agrawal highlighted that they fall short of adequately catering to students’ requirements.

Agrawal pointed out that some students are resorting to skipping meals, residing in substandard living conditions, or juggling multiple jobs alongside their studies. The recommendations presented by Agrawal and the UPEI student union to MLAs include removing unfair obstacles to financial aid, expanding the George Coles Bursary, raising the ceiling for student financial support, setting limits on tuition hikes, enhancing the academic experience for international students, and facilitating students’ transition into the workforce.

In response to the student union’s proposals, Green Party MLA Karla Bernard commended the articulation and reasonableness of the recommendations. Bernard emphasized the importance of supporting students during their academic pursuits as they represent the future workforce and society. She noted that government assistance encompasses not only financial aid but also regulatory and legislative adjustments to ensure equitable access to necessary support.

Bernard cited an example of eliminating parents’ income as a criterion for student loan eligibility, underscoring its significant impact on students who do not receive parental support. The committee members, as per Agrawal, positively received the union’s presentation, indicating openness to the suggestions. A comprehensive report containing the recommendations will be forwarded to the government for review and potential implementation.
