Seventy-two individuals have become sick after consuming salami that was recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. The Public Health Agency of Canada recently issued an updated alert regarding an outbreak of salmonella infections associated with Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet, Rea brand Genoa Salami Hot, and Bona brand Mild Genova Salami. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency initiated a recall of these products in Ontario, Alberta, and Manitoba on June 10.

However, as of the latest update, additional instances have been recorded, bringing Alberta’s total infections to 57, Ontario to 14, and Manitoba to one. Since the recall was announced, seven individuals have been hospitalized.

According to the federal health agency, most affected individuals fell ill between mid-April and mid-June after consuming salami in sandwiches or from deli counters. Consumers are advised to check for specific product codes: 5035 226, 5049 226, 5020 228, 5035 228, and 5035 226.

Salmonella is a foodborne bacterial infection that can manifest days or weeks after exposure, even without evident symptoms. It poses a significant risk of severe and potentially fatal complications, especially for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Common symptoms in healthy individuals may include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, cramps, and diarrhea.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, confirming the link to the mentioned salami brands. For further information and updates on this outbreak, individuals are encouraged to follow official health guidelines and news sources.
